Our June First Fridays art opening is by our friend and local artist Kendall Cox. Drawing upon early to mid-20th century personal and domestic photographs, this beautiful series of prints “engages the mundane themes of mortality, memory, and repetition.” This really is a must-see.

The Garage’s May instillation is by Richmond based artist, Sean Kelly. “Flux” is born out of a desire to visualize a personal sense of indeterminacy. Through the work, Sean strives to oscillate between the invitation of chaos and the establishment of order - a terrifying yet essential process for growth - while exploring the lines between the self and the other; the mind and the body; and one’s perception and an ‘objective’ sense of reality. Due to the large number of art exhibits tomorrow we’ll be extending our hours until 9:30PM.

Small Sur

A long time favorite of ours, Baltimore based Small Sur creates ethereal indie/folk - “songs that are as close as we city-dwellers can get to the feeling of a strong harvest, songs you have to experience with your bare hands, pulling them out of the ground and shaking the soil off them” (Tiny Mix Tapes). On top of that the forecast for tonight is sunny and in the high-60’s. We highly suggest coming out for this one. Local singer/songwriter Chris Campanelli opens (suggested donation $5).

No Ordinary People

Please join us tomorrow from 5:00-7:00 for local artist Matt Kleberg’s No Ordinary People, a collection of giant portraits of people portrayed as… well, far from normal. The paintings, in the artist’s words, “find their inspiration in the weight of human longing” and are really a must-see. Refreshments provided as always.

February’s First Fridays Opening: Sebastijan Jemec and Megan O’Hearn

In It Was Real To Us, both Jemec and O’Hearn alter original images to produce a “manufactured reality.” The photos quietly show how recorded history is held captive by the imagination and turned into something that is only loosely based on real-life experience. Not only is it all aesthetically stimulating, but it serves as a thoughtful reminder of how imperfect and unpredictable our human understanding actually is.

Please join us Friday, February 5, from 5:00-7:00pm. And dress warmly! We’ll be stocked up on coffee and hot chocolate for when you get there.

Join us this Friday for the opening of our November installation- “Staycation” by Dana Giacofci.

Inspired by Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz–foreshadowing the end of a Gilded Age–Dana’s prints are an exploration of what happens when imagination and preoccupation assault otherwise routine repetitive travels along the highways of the everyday.

“6000 Instant Photographs from 2001 to 2009″ by James Ford

We’re very excited about October’s installation as our friend, James Ford, will be displaying a selection of his 6000+ Polaroid photographs, taken over a period of eight years. Narrowing it down to a mere 2000 (!), he’ll be displaying the photos on a wall-sized grid in chronological order in a way that not only proves his remarkable eye for photography but also his passion for both film and comics.

“Cumulatively, the photographs represent an ongoing work which functions as both observation and autobiography; the work is both lyrical and documentary, and contains portraits, landscapes, personal moments, famous landmarks, nostalgic instances, puzzling obscurities, messy fragments, eye-catching distractions, humorous gags, bacchanalian mistakes, and a few brief moments of unexpected beauty. This utterly disposable, imperfect, impermanent (and now largely extinct) medium allows us to capture brief and similarly impermanent moments and preserve them for a little while longer, and to share the experience with others.”
